Curry

I am a huge fan of curry and so on Wednesday I made some chicken curry rice. For the curry I used onions, garlic, ginger, tomatoes, plain yogurt, a cinnamon stick, bay leaf, curry powder, and of course, chicken.
First I cut the onions and minced the garlic and ginger. I then put them in the pot and cooked them until the onions became a light brown. This was where I was supposed to add the curry powder but I kind of forgot and added the tomatoes and yogurt first. After I added the chicken I remembered and added the curry powder but I don't think it changed too much. Later I added the bay leaf and cinnamon stick. After making sure the chicken was cooked thoroughly we served it on top of white rice. Even with a little bit of a mess up, the food still tasted good and we finished on the first day. Usually my family takes a few days to finish curry rice. Anyway here's a couple of pictures of it.

As the school year ends, my project is coming to an end and this may be my last blog. I am going to make sure I keep cooking and hopefully figure out how to improvise my cooking.

So we had our pitch a little bit ago. I made two different kinds of apple cake: one from fuji apple and another from granny smith apples. I had the visitors try both of the cakes and had them vote on which was better. The result was pretty close but the granny smith apple won by just three votes.

During the pitch Mrs. Hechlik was taking pictures of everyone's presentation and she got one of me with my cake. Here it is!

Later on I made some food without my mom or recipes... but my dad was with me. We made some chicken and for the sauce we used some leftover pasta sauce that my mom made a couple days ago and added things to it. It ended really well. We served on some rice with some asparagus and it tasted great! Here a picture of it.
Then over the weekend I made some bread. This didn't end as well as the chicken but it didn't taste bad. The bread was filled with custard cream which I also made myself but the bread became a little dryer than what I wanted after baking it. I don't have a picture of the bread because I completely forgot about that.

Hopefully next time I will have more cooking things that I can share.

Prom?

These past few weeks have been brutally stressful with the SAT to AP Calculus tests. But there was one joyous event during that awful week. It happened one Tuesday morning. Prom is approaching at my high school and I decided to asked a girl to prom with a cake.
It was a simple roll cake with some strawberry cream and making it was not very hard besides the fact that it was late at night. In addition to that I found that baking is a lot more fun than cooking dinner. You don't have to deal with cutting onions and I love sweets. I think I'll be focusing more on baking from now on. And baking doesn't just include sweets so I can still make things for dinner.

We are also having our pitch on Tuesday along with a Spanish class that is doing their own 20 time project. I'm going to have to figure out what I am going to take to that... it'll have to be something I can make A LOT of.

Oh yeah... just in case you guys were wondering, the girl said yes.

The Cooking has Begun

I finally got some cooking done!!! In the past two weeks I made several things: ratatouille, paradise cheese salad, spinach quiche, baked parsnips and baked salmon.

I made the ratatouille first. It was a bit of a struggle since it was my first time cooking by myself and this was probably the hardest thing I made during the two weeks. I followed a recipe I found on the internet but made a few changes since I didn't have some of the ingredients on the recipe. While cooking, I found out that you can peel the skin off a tomato. I didn't think it was possible but my mom told me how to do it. I also experienced the pain of cutting onions; it makes your eyes hurt so much and that part was not very enjoyable. But overall I had some fun in making the ratatouille and it tasted good.

The next time I was in the kitchen I made baked salmon and baked parsnips. This was very easy. I don't really know if this counts as cooking because all I did was add herbs and garlic on the salmon and put it in the oven. And with the parsnips, I cut them and mixed them with olive oil and put that in the oven too. I feel like this was a little easy to be counted as cooking but the food tasted good.

The paradise cheese salad is a pineapple jello dessert and it was probably the second hardest thing after the ratatouille but this was pretty easy too. It starts with some lemon jello and then you had sour cream, cream cheese and pineapples to it. My mom had made this in the past and I loved it so she taught me how to make it myself.

I cheated quite a bit with the quiche because on time. I used a pre-made pie crust and just put some eggs, spinach, cheese and onions in it. I then put it in the oven. I didn't do much with this.

I feel like I haven't gotten much actual cooking in since I have been so busy between school, track, and soccer. Hopefully I can make something a little more advanced in the coming weeks!!!

Blog #2

I did almost nothing over spring break. I haven't started the cooking part yet but I did check out a book at the public library. It's called The No Recipe Cookbook by Susan Crowther. I haven't gotten very far into it but so far it's pretty interesting. It says that "Cooking is not about knowing how to follow perfect recipes. Cooking is about knowing how to cook." This is exactly what I have been wanting to learn about. Hoping I can find some time to finish this book soon.

Here is a picture of The No Recipe Cookbook

While I read this book I think I will start off with a few recipes to get used to the kitchen and figure out some of the basic tastes. I'm thinking of starting with some ratatouille because I love the movie and it isn't too difficult to make. We'll see how this turns out.

Let the adventure begin!

I'm a high school who wants to learn how to cook for a school  20 time project. I haven't actually started the actual cooking part yet and I'm really not sure what to make either. I have  very little experience with cooking.

I can really cook anything... as long as my mom is with me walking me through every step. I want to be able to cook by myself. I really want to know how to cook by myself; what tastes good together and how to make things look good. I want to just be able to improvise with what I have and make things look and taste good to me.

Now like I said before I am not sure what I want to make. I don't really know where to start either or which direction/approach to take on this challenge. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking of starting with something sweet because I REALLY like sweet things and I REALLY don't like spicy food.

Stay Classy.
